Travel day # 8 and recap!

I haven't had time to write! I've been having way too much fun with Sofia to be able to sit in front of the computer and write about what has been going on!

We went to two museums in Frankfurt and walked around a whole bunch and we were able to have some traditional german food with her cousin Alexis and her boyfriend, who were very very hospitable and showed us around the city a bunch. She also took us to a gallery opening of this artist who did these awesome mixedmedia pieces. It was really awesome. I love art! Haha. We also went to this HUGE openair market and I found an AMAZING medium format Agfa camera that seems to be in perfect working condition and I am SO EXCITED to get some film into it and see if it works! It looks like this:

It has popout bellows and ahhh. It's is godly.

Then we headed to Berlin yesterday. We almost missed the train but it was fine and we made it here in good time. We had our own little cabin and we had the lights down and turned the heat up and it was like our own little cocoon of comfortableness. Haha. It was great. It was about a 4 hour train ride but it was pretty pleasant. I took a little nap which I definitely needed and then we planned out where we were going to stay when we got to Berlin and what we were going to do.

We ended up in this nice hostel that has a cozy and fun bar, a cafe [that had AWESOME breakfast this morning] and really helpful staff. We had these two really terrible guy dorm mates who were like snobby prep university boys from like paris and london and they were really gross and stupid. They came in at like 7am and were SO LOUD and then they snored all night. We knew that they had to check out today because they told us they were leaving today, and check out is at 12pm. 12pm rolled around adn we had had breakfast and come back up and taken showers and gotten ready for the day and they were still asleep. Ha. If they weren't such terrible people we would have woken then up, but they deserved the late checkout fee. Haha.

Today we went to an AMAMAMAAMAAAAZZINNGGG photography exhibit way out on the outskirts of Berlin. It was fucking incredible. So many different artists and different kinds of photographs and holy crap. It was incredible. Some really beautiful work. I wrote like 9 pages in my journal with ideas on content and presentation that the show inspired me with. We both really enjoyed it. What else did we do today. We looked for a flea market that is notoriously amazing but we couldn't find it, so we shopped a little more and got lunch and walked around exploring and taking photographs.

Tonight we're staying on a hostel BOAT! It should be really awesome! I am super excited!! I will give the details on that later because I'm sure it will be quite the experience!

Day 53: Disaster strikes...

It's a long and complicated story, but my files for my photography final all got wiped. Well, I guess saying that they're not usable is more correct. It's terrible! Thankfully I have been able to shoot just about everyone in the past hour or so. I almost have as many photos as I did before everything happened. It's been a very stressful past couple days, to say the least.

We went to Aix-en-Provence yesterday. It was pretty eventful. We Were able to see some amazing Giacometti paintings and sculptures. That was definitely the highlight of the trip. We spent most of the day shopping [I caved and bought a new coat, skirt, and shirt. They were all on sale though!!] And I helped Brittany with asking people if she could photograph them. It was a pretty great day. A bunch of my friends got really drunk and were so unbelievably hyper when we met up at the end of the day and it was extremely amusing. We went to IKEA to buy frames for our work to display it for Vernissage and I spend 73euro. The worst part is that I won't even be able to keep the frames! I don't know how I'm going to manage to get all of my artwork back home. Speaking of, I have to get some more boxes packed up to send home. I sent one already and I have a giant pile in my room of stuff that I'm not going to need from now until I get back to the states, and it's growing larger and larger every day.

Okay I really really realllllly need to get back to working. It is so scary that Vernissage is coming up so fast!! I am so extremely excited to travel after this quarter and then finally make it home to the states. It's going to be extremely sad leaving here though..I have such mixed emotions right now! Ugh!

Oh and also, last night my two guy friends Ed and [blonde]Cory decided that they wanted haircuts so I cut both of their hair, and then decided to let Cory cut mine too. I don't know what I was thinking haha. I now have lines shaved into the side of my head! It looks like it has the potential to be really amazing-looking, but right now you can definitely tell it was a late-night drunken decision hahaha. I'm going to have my hair dresser fix it up when I get back into Savannah, because I really like the idea of it, but right now it just looks kind of silly. Hahaha.

Day 39: It's so late!

I got a ton of work done today. I've started making, compiling, and editing my photos for my new project and they look great so far. I don't have what the final presentation is going to look like yet, so for now it's just the portraits.

Flickr!

Anyway, Halloween is this coming Friday and I don't really have a costume..I'm just going to be a zombie or something. We're going into Aix en Provence to watch our friends spin some drum and bass at a France discotheque. Hahhaha. How awesome is that.

Oi. I need to sleep! What am I doing! I must be craaaazy.

Day 20: Lavender and shopping!

Today we went to the Lavender Museum. It was so awesome. The exhibit was great and the boutique...oh god the boutique. I bought so much. I bought this muscle relaxing lotion that I've been putting on my ankle and my neck/shoulders, and some pure oil for my temples to sleep and for headaches. They're both amazing. I also got some little goodies for my friends there!

Then when we got back I reserved a room for my parents at the little cafe for tonight! I hope they end up coming here today like we had halfway planned. I want to take my mom the lavender museum so she can buy some things for her friends. The lavender products here blow anything that you can find from the states out of the freaking WATER!

So for the Vernissage at the end of the quarter, the school holds a contest for the image that they put on the poster that is wheatpasted all around the neighboring cities.
Want to see our submission? :D
Those are my lovers. Rachel, Cory, and Cory. We're practically inseparable and it's amazing.
Au revoir!

Day 13: Oppede par les pieds.

Avignon was amazing. It reminded me of areas of DC. Lots of hip people hanging around going shopping at H&M, Sephora, and other stores that we have back home. Thankfully I had only brought 25 euro with me, or else I would have probably done some impulse shopping.

For my friend Brittany's project, she's talking to people and asking them to write a story in her journal in their native language and then she takes a photo of them to go along with their story. Everyone that she approached spoke only French, so I stuck around her and translated from French to English and back again. It was so awesome to speak so much French! I miss speaking it regularly. I was also able to get some amazing photos of my own.

Today we went to Oppede Le Vieux but I somehow managed to retwist my ankle in my sleep, so I had to sit out. I went with them, but unfortunately today was the one trip where we had some extensive hiking. I did some light walking around the bottom of the city and again, got some beautiful photos that I'm looking forward to uploading. I think I'm going to start printing some tonight.

I've also started doing blind and modified blind contours whenever I have a spare minute to sit down. I love them. I hope to have my entire little notebook filled with drawings and writings by the end of the quarter. That's a hell of a lot of drawing, but it's a good goal!

I'm going to Apt today to buy some yarn with the artist in residence here in Lacoste whom I've become good friends with. Her name is Susan Laney and her work is beautiful. I'm going to teach her how to knit and I'm SO looking forward to wrapping my hands in yarn again! I'm going to make a bunch of little things to sell at Vernissage I think. Cheap and easy scarves and maybe a few hats. Hm I should probably look up some quick patterns so I can know which needles to buy. Anyway, off I go!

Day 5: Il fait pleut.

It has been very drizzley and chilled this morning. I was doing yoga waiting for the sun to rise but it never did. Well, I guess it did, but it was trapped behind thick rain clouds in the distance. I had breakfast and walked to a few of the shops in town. It turns out that every Tuesday there is a mini market right in fount of our post office! I bought some potatoes, red peppers, a zucchini, some tomatoes, and some fresh grapes. All of that for around 2 euro! Very inexpensive.

It was nice to walk around in the dreary weather with my tea and fresh veggies. It made me not as depressed that it was raining. It's scary though, because the second a little water comes down on the already slick and dangerous cobblestone road, you're doomed for a fall.

I got my photos from yesterday edited and resized. The dreamlike sequence of photos that I took yesterday turned out extremely interesting. I really enjoy their aesthetic but I have yet to get any other opinions. We'll see I guess. I hope that converting them to jpgs didn't destroy the color profiles this time. Just remember: the real files will most definitely look better than that on this site!
